About the project

Background

The Alameda Native History Project was founded in 2019 as an art project based on the history of the First Alamedans, and finding the tribe that belongs to this place we now call “Alameda”.

Over the past six years, we’ve focused on research, education, and advocacy for the First Alamedans, and the accurate representation of local Indigenous history.

Mission

Honoring the ancestral legacy of the First Alamedans, the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe of the San Francisco Bay Area, our mission is to advocate for tribal restoration and Native American representation in local governance. We hold institutions accountable for their impact on Indigenous communities, promoting transparency and educating the public about Native American rights, representation, and resource allocation.

Vision

Through collaborative efforts, we envision a future where Indigenous heritage informs and enriches our shared community.

Methods

We achieve our mission through:

  • Developing innovative education tools like interactive maps, reference charts, and resources that reflect Indigenous histories and perspectives, integrating Arts & Humanities, Technology, and GIS research
  • Creating immersive experiences that foster deeper understanding and appreciation of Ohlone culture and Indigenous communities, including:
    • Acorn harvests and traditional ecological knowledge practices
    • Culinary education and traditional Culinary arts programs
    • Arts initiatives and cultural revitalization programs
    • Sustainable Agriculture practices and regenerative land stewardship
    • Habitat and Eco-Restoration efforts revitalizing native ecosystems
  • Advocating for transparency and accountability in institutions impacting Indigenous communities
Goals
  • Preserve Indigenous cultural heritage and promote cultural awareness in Alameda
  • Empower Native American communities through education, advocacy, and community engagement
  • Foster a vibrant future where Indigenous heritage thrives in Alameda
